The Assyrian Samuel Suleyman who yesterday was arrested by the Turkish police has been released. Samuel was arrested alongide several journalists who covered the events in Idil (Azeckh).
This morning he was before a prosecutor, and after questioning he was released. We have also had it confirmed that Turkish police have busted St. Mary Church door and did a scan. Last week, Turkish security forces repeatedly broke into the houses of the Assyrians. Today there is only one single Assyrian family left in Idil (Azechk)
Arbitrary arrests of Assyrians in Turkey
The Turkish state continues to terrorize the few remaining Assyrians. We have recently reported about the Turkish government’s arbitrary arrest of the human rights activist Sawa Oshana Ide. We have also reported about Idil (Azech) where the police has broken into Assyrian homes. Today, we have also receives news about another arrest. This time it was Samuel Suleyman that was arrested on flimsy grounds. We have also received information that the Turkish security forces have smashed the St. Mary Church in Idil (Azech). There are some pictures and videos circulating of the event, but we have not been able to verify the authenticity of them. We will follow up on the developments.
