Recently a joint delegation of Assyrians from Turkey, Sweden and Belgium met officials of Turkish State Department and the president of the foundations in Ankara to discuss the Assyrian Church properties transmitted to the treasury. The Turkish officials are not satisfied because the issue has been raised to Swedish Parliament, but must be solved within the Turkish juridical system, they say, according to Kuryakos Ergun, head of Mor Gabriel Foundation, which was established in 1840. There have been no promises from the Turkish officials during the meeting but a decree by President Erdoğan could be enough to return the ownership of church buildings and cemeteries. Otherwise the legal way would be necessary. However, it is much more difficult to regain the ownership of agricultural lands, the Assyrians were told.
