On March 16, 1918 (March 3, according to the Julian calendar) the Assyrian Patriarch Mar Shimon Benyamen was murdered by the Kurdish leader Simko Shikaki in a betrayal. The Patriarch was invited home to Simko in order to create an alliance between the Assyrians and the Kurds against the Turks, but he was shot in the back by Simko when he would set his foot in his chariot. Naum Faiq, the editor of the journal Bethnahrin, received the news with dismay. He attended a memorial service held for the soul of the murdered leader at St. James Cathedral in Yonkers city and read a poem he had written about the assassination of Mar Shimon.
