On Sunday November 6, 2016, about 150 representatives of the Assyrians in Khabour gathered in Tell Tamer to a general assembly, where a new council of 15 was elected, as well as 5 senior advisers.
Atour Isahak, spokeswoman of the council of Natoreh d Khabour, tells about the reason for the establishment of this new council; an administrative organ to deal with any question the Assyrian villagers of Khabour are facing. The idea was presented a year ago but could not be realized before now. The Assyrian Democratic Party, which until now claims to be the representative of Khabour, was not participating in the meeting, Atour Isak says.
The new council enjoys a strong support by the Assyrian League in Beirut, to which any financial aid to Khabour should be directed, she adds.
